I Broke Through My “Comfort Coma”

I have a love/hate relationship with comfort. This fact was a glaring spotlight during my 10-Week Challenge at Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping.
I was really “comfy” in my life prior to starting the Farrell’s program. Living day-to-day, eating, drinking and laughing like a king. As a professional performer (I do stand-up comedy for a living), I am most comfortable on stage being silly and helping others laugh at life.
You don’t have to be fit to be a comedian. I have even rationalized that I’m probably funnier when I’m chunky because to quote from Raising Arizona “round is funny.”
But, behind all of that there was a deep dissatisfaction with my lack of fitness and genuine well-being.
Starting Farrell’s was certainly uncomfortable. I didn’t know what to expect. I’d had negative gym experiences before. Plus, I didn’t know most, if not all, of the people there. It seemed like just a big, scary journey.
And, there was something truly humbling about showing up at orientation and finding out, through the fitness tests, where my health and fitness levels actually were.
But now I am so glad I broke through and awoke from my “comfort coma.”
I attribute the progress to many things, but here are three biggies: First, from day one, Farrell’s fosters a welcoming atmosphere that is truly supportive and team-oriented. There is always someone nearby to help you with form and/or encouragement. This in contrast to many gyms that seem cliquey and leave you feeling, clueless and uncool.
Second, the workouts never get stagnant. There are always new ways to get your butt kicked. If you want to take it to your ‘”evel 10,” every class provides every opportunity to do so. (Oh my..I just thought about mountain-climbers).
Third, the program has provided me with a different way to eat and live. Not by my prior “food for comfort” habits, but a new “food for fuel” approach.
The irony is that with the new weight loss and fitness, now I have become much more comfortable, and in the good ways. I sleep better, snore less, have more energy and that deep dissatisfaction has left my insides and has been replaced by a stronger core. Yeah baby — let’s plank!
