Goal: Be in Better Shape at 50 than I was at 40

Why Farrell’s Extreme Bodyshaping?

Objective:           Maintain Excellent Physical Condition and Health

Goal:                     Be in better shape at 50 than I was at 40

Path:                     Farrell’s Extreme Bodyshaping

Support:              Spouse, FXB coaches, instructors and FXB peers

One of my ‘Big Seven Things’ is #3 – Maintain excellent physical condition and health.  Through much of my life that was accomplished through visiting a gym three (3) times per week for weight training and minimal cardio activity.  I played sports and enjoyed outdoor activities.  That worked Ok up until my early forties .  Over time my waistline grew and my appetite for greasy foods and beer was more than infrequent trips to the gym could tame.

DanS (3)In the fall of 2009 Rebekah and I were attending a business meeting in Southern CA.  Early one morning, after a 30 minute workout on the elliptical machine and 30 minutes of pushing weights around in a gym, the personal trainer walked up and asked if I’d like him to show me what I should be doing instead of what I liked to do?  I agreed, and he asked, ‘What do you want to accomplish?’  I quickly stated my life objective, at which time he smiled and asked how that was going?  For the first time someone pushed me about my health.  Without hesitation I told him my goal is to be in better shape at 50 than I was at 40, and….to be in the same or better shape at 60.

There – I said it out loud.  From then on, I repeated it often.  And, at 46yrs old it seemed like a reasonable goal.  There wasn’t any reason to get too crazy about changing anything right away.  Months passed with no real change in my eating habits or my physical routine.  So, nothing changed in my overall health.

The next defining moment came at a business lunch April 2012.  Over lunch a friend said in passing that it was week 16 in his Farrell’s experience.  That caught my attention since I thought it was a 10 week challenge.  Chick acknowledged it was a 10 week start, but he signed up to keep going and he loved it!  As I was packing in a handful of potato chips I muttered that I have all the equipment in my basement, plus I belong to an Anytime Fitness type place so I can go when I want to go….

With a long pause he caught my attention, and then said – ‘You’ll never sweat like this in your basement, it’s only 45 minutes a day and they’ll teach you how to eat right…eating is 70% of being healthy!’  he smiled and told me to join the next session.  The path to reach my goal and realize my objective prior to age 50 was becoming clear.

Later that evening, I told Rebekah about my conversation with Chick over lunch.  She shook her head because she wanted to join FXB for the past two years but I kept saying we have all the equipment in the basement (elliptical, weights, bench, nautilus machine, etc.) and she could come to the gym with me anytime day or night.  The next day Rebekah met Javier at the Johnston FXB location.  The next session would start the first week of June.  Rebekah paid and we waited to begin.

I didn’t start the program with a weight goal or a body type goal.  My objective was to get in shape – better shape than I was in at 40.  At 48, soon to be 49yrs old, this seemed like a good idea.  I hate running, so the mile run was the only part I dreaded, but I survived the initial test day!

The final piece for me is the support system that made all of this possible.  You can buy DVDs, you can buy gym equipment and join a variety of health clubs.  The support from Rebekah and FXB has been the difference maker for me.  I knew others expected me to be at class each day, just like I expected to see them too.

Rebekah is not a morning person.  The only time I could commit to FXB for 10 weeks was 5am.  Without hesitation she said she wanted to do it with me.  Quickly our coaches, Vince and Dave became our friends.  Javier always had a smile and encouraging word as we walked in and out of the gym each day.  When I felt like slacking on a set of abs, a coach or peer would encourage me to jump back in, or punch the bag a little harder, etc.    The instructors took an interest in us.  They’d help with technique and seemed genuinely interested in our progress.

For the first time in my life, I had nutritional guidance.  It was simple, useable information.   The work is done one day at a time.   The classes are fun and challenging.   There are all varieties of ages, body types and fitness levels in every class.

Here we are.  More than one year later, and I’ve reached my goal.  July 4,2013 I turned 50 and I was in the best shape of my life.  The support and systematic approach of FXB helped me form good habits that are now part of my daily routine.   A couple of my friends have joined the FXB experience.

Six months ago I started the process to be a trainer and recently helped coach a new group through the 10 week course.  The FXB family is sincere in their efforts to help others improve their nutrition and fitness.  It’s not a weight loss program or quick fix routine.  Follow the FXB program and you’ll be amazed at your results.   You’ll find new friends and a support network along the journey to reach your goals and live your dreams.  It all starts with the decision to begin and the determination to continue.

As you can see from the pictures the nutrition plan and fitness routine has made a difference.  I went from a 40 pants to size 32.  Although I still don’t like running, I was able to cut my mile time in half (not bad for an old guy)!    It was encouraging to see my endurance and strength increase.  To this day, the instructors in this program continue to challenge me.   The next part of my goal is to be in this or better shape when I turn 60 July 4, 2023.  FXB will help keep me focused one day at a time
