Winning The Mental Challenge
In January 2013, after quite a bit of encouragement from a longtime friend, I started Farrell’s cardio kickboxing and resistance bands training. I was certain I would never be able to stick to the nutrition plan or the workout routine all while managing multiple jobs and family activities. It has been one of the best decisions that I have ever made. Before the program I was teetering between 200 and 210 lbs., 21.7% body fat and I felt terrible all the time. I was always tired, stressed, ate terribly, and consumed an excessive amount of alcohol on a daily basis. As a cancer survivor from my teenage years I had taken the attitude that I will eat and drink whatever I wanted and didn’t need to exercise. Wow, what a terrible attitude that was!
I was excited but very nervous when my 10-week orientation and testing began. At my initial orientation and weigh-in, I could only do 29 push-ups and 21 sit-ups in a minute. The first couple weeks of the program were very hard adjusting to both the nutrition plan and the exercise routine. It was difficult for me to plan meals and get past being sore. The Farrell’s staff, coaches, fellow classmates at the Edgewood Rd location, and my family were all extremely encouraging. They provided the support that was key to my turning the corner both mentally and physically. I was able to stick to the nutrition plan and completed the program with 100% attendance. Even though I didn’t win the 10-week challenge, I far exceeded my personal goals. I won the mental challenge of changing my lifestyle.
I ended the 10 weeks at 176 lbs., 15.6% body fat, 14 less inches, 1:31 off my mile run, 82 push-ups, and 51 sit-ups in a minute. Needless to say, I was thrilled. I couldn’t sign up as a FIT Member fast enough. I now sleep better, have plenty of energy, eat a healthy diet, consume far less alcohol, and I look forward to my work out every day. My daily workouts reduce my stress level and continually improve my mental well-being. In addition to being part of the Farrell’s team as a participant, I have had the honor of joining the team as an instructor. I am excited to share my story with other members and hopefully help them to achieve, or exceed their fitness goals. Most importantly, the program will transform their lifestyle.
