Courage, Confidence and Competition
My name is Barbie. My husband, children, and I live in Des Moines, Iowa. I am a very proud mother of three. I have two boys and one girl. William (age 6), Caleb (age 4), and Claire (age 2). Both my boys have special needs. William has Apraxia and Caleb has Autism. Between different schools and both needing therapy at different locations, busy was a major understatement.
I was never athletic in my youth. When I had my first child and seriously struggled with losing the weight I decided to start at Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping. This would have been June 14, 2008.
When I started I was so shy I could barely stand at the back of the room and watch a class the day I signed up. I still remember my first class like yesterday. Actually, I remember hearing, “4, 3, 2, 1 Annnnd . . . that’s class!” We finished class with a plank that day and I collapsed to the mat! I got to my car, called my husband and told him, “If I don’t lose the weight here, something is seriously wrong with me. That kicked my butt. IT WAS AWESOME!!” He laughed at me, said “good” and I have been addicted ever since.
I celebrate my FXB anniversary each year. It has changed my life in so many ways I couldn’t begin to list all of them.
Now, almost six years later I am proud to say that I not only instruct and coach, but I am a Level 3 instructor. Level 3 is the highest level within the program.
In addition to that accomplishment, this past fall (2013) I made the enormous decision to do my first fitness competition. I decided on a bikini division competition through the National Physique Committee (NPC). It is the same competition as body builders but the bikini division has less muscle requirements. 🙂
To prepare for this I stuck to the Farrell’s principles. I didn’t have to change much apart from having to be stricter with my diet. After Thanksgiving I had zero “fun day” meals. I continued to eat six small meals a day. I simply lowered my carbs and increased my proteins to help build the extra muscle. Max Muscle of Des Moines monitored my progress with weekly body fat percentage checks and helped me tweak my nutrition as needed to keep me on track. I increased my water intake from 80 oz. to one gallon daily. I also banded up with the MAXIMUM band I could handle. I had to ensure I would reach muscle failure EVERY SINGLE EXERCISE. Therefore on many exercises I would use two bands.
I supplemented with weight lifting 2-3 times per week. I would follow the Farrell’s routine, upper, lower, upper, lower, and so forth. I only focused on my weaker muscle groups and the ones I needed to accentuate for the competition. For me that was my back, shoulders, quads, hamstrings, and glutes.
The week of the show includes “cutting” which isn’t part of the regular plan. I had to cut carbs and water to help boost my stage appearance. That part was difficult but is a “necessary evil” in the competition world. Wrestlers, fighters, and other competitive athletes do this same thing.
So on March 8, 2014, me, a 31-year old mother of three, stepped on stage for my first NPC competition! There was only ONE other woman that was older than me and had any children in my group. Most of the ladies were 5-12 years younger than me and had no children. To say I was scared would be a massive understatement, but I did it! I would have NEVER considered doing such a thing before I joined FXB. This program has given me such an appreciation for fitness and a level of confidence I never had before. I look forward to continuing this process, and doing another show soon.
