Two New Moms, One Great Fitness Program
Meet Billie and Kim. They are current Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping members in Sioux Falls, SD that have recently had children. Both were members (and coaches!) prior to welcoming their first children.
They both have shared their stories with us about how Farrell’s has helped them get in shape pre- and post-pregnancy!
My name is Billie and I am a Critical Care Pharmacy Specialist at Avera McKennan Hospital as well as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at South Dakota State University. I had been a Farrell’s FIT member for 11 months prior to becoming pregnant and had lost 15 lbs. and a lot of inches (1-2 pants sizes). I initially joined to get back in shape and lose the weight I had gained during residency, and was very committed to attending workouts and following the nutrition plan. When I found out I was pregnant my doctor told me that my level of fitness would really be an advantage down the road (less complications, easier labor, etc.), which I found to be true for me.
I gained 80 pounds while pregnant! While pregnant I did continue strength training with resistance bands at home for a few months, though it did not take long for me to miss the Farrell’s classes as it was harder to challenge myself and commit to regular exercise on my own. I walked daily throughout my pregnancy. I was very thankful for my knowledge of nutrition that I had gained through Farrell’s and tried to continue many aspects of that while pregnant, as overall the nutrition regimen really supports healthy eating habits.
I couldn’t wait to get started back at Farrell’s. I started again six weeks after giving birth (as soon as I had my doctor’s approval). I was very ready to start to get back in shape, lose weight and start wearing my regular clothes again. I had good success with Farrell’s prior to pregnancy, had really enjoyed the style of workouts and knew the nutrition plan was healthy and realistic for a new mom, so I didn’t even think of going anywhere else.
There have been some different challenges now that I’m a new mom. The biggest challenge I see now versus prior to being a mom is time. I have tried to plan my attendance at workouts ahead of time, and it works best for me to go right away after work and before my daughter will be home from daycare or I go later in the evening after she goes to bed so I don’t feel like I am missing spending time with her. When I first started back at Farrell’s, I was surprised at low my energy level was and how difficult many of the core strengthening exercises (planks, etc.) were versus prior. Nutrition was also more difficult at first, mainly due to lack of time to prepare meals. Getting ideas for quick meals and snacks from other FXB members has been very helpful.
Since coming back to Farrell’s post-pregnancy (I have been back 11 months now), I have lost 75 lbs. and am back to wearing most of my pre-pregnancy clothes. My overall energy level has improved drastically, which is evident both at workouts and at home. I love the intensity of the workouts – it is hard and is supposed to be. I also love the positive environment pushing you to push yourself and I’m now working to lose those last 5 lbs. to be back at my pre-pregnancy weight.
I also want to mention that I couldn’t have done this without my husband and his incredible support of working with me to plan ahead so I am able to attend classes.
As a new mom I now see the benefits of being fit, which now extend far beyond myself – if I am healthier, happier, more energetic, I can see it is positively reflected in the rest of my family.

My name is Kim. I am an RN at Sanford’s OB/GYN clinic. I began my 10-week fitness journey in July of 2012. I fell in love with the program and went on to becoming a coach and instructing strength training classes.
Before I started Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping I had hit a low with how I felt and looked and knew I had to make a huge change. I knew it would be a journey and would take longer than 10 weeks. I didn’t have children prior to starting, and knew I had to change my life in order to bring another life into this world.
When I started, I went from 217 pounds down to 147 pounds in 8 1/2 months (70 pounds). I went from a size 18/20 to a size 6/8.
My husband and I were excited when we found out we were expecting. I am convinced that my good health and fitness allowed me to get pregnant the one and only month that we tried to conceive. I gained 75 pounds during pregnancy. The day before I had our son, I weighed 222. So I had even surpassed my prior heaviest weight, but at least this time I was pregnant.
I continued to try to stay fit during my pregnancy. I ran my first ever 5K when I was 13 weeks pregnant. I kept on at Farrell’s working out until I was about 16 weeks. I continued to run until I was about 20 weeks. I played volleyball until I was 28 weeks pregnant. I then continued to go on walks during the end of my pregnancy. I even walked 2 miles outside after my water broke to try to get the contractions to start!
I started back at Farrell’s six weeks after giving birth. I knew that I needed to get back with it and not allow myself to fall back into bad habits. I knew that if I could lose the weight once, I could do it again.
I have had a few challenges now as a new mom. I am breastfeeding my son and it is easy to get dehydrated and have my milk supply become diminished so I try to get in a lot of water! My schedule also fills up fast, so I have been grateful that my husband has been very helpful with picking up our son from daycare so I can go work out every day.
Nutrition is also much harder now. My willpower isn’t as strong this time around, but I continue to work at it.
So far, I have lost approximately 50 pounds. I have gone from a size 18 to a 9/10. I would love to lose another 20 pounds and get back to where I was before baby. But I know that my body is different now after having a child, so it will take some work.
For me, consistency has been key. Staying the course and knowing that it is a marathon, not a sprint to the finish.
I also love that Farrell’s is like a family. I have friends that I work out with every day, which motivates me
Farrell’s has taught me that you need to make time for yourself. It is just 45 minutes a day but it is key to having a healthy life. It is the least you can do so that you can try to be there for your children for many years to come.
