Stronger Than I Was in High School Thanks to Farrell’s
I have gotten the question many times, “How do you do Farrell’s, isn’t that for younger people and an intense program?” I sit here and think, yes it is an intense program, but I feel better than I EVER have in my life. That is no understatement, I feel stronger than I ever have, I can run faster, keep up with my grandchildren and even partner with the “younger” people in class. I never thought that at the age of 62 that I would be saying that my arms and body are stronger than they were in high school, but they are thanks to Farrell’s!
In 2008, I had a spinal fusion, which had left me inactive for some time. One of the first people I met here at the Ames Farrell’s was the new franchise owner Angie Gurwell, whom had back problems that required surgery. She shared her story of experience, strength and hope. I thought to myself, “If she can do this, I can, too!” When I first started Farrell’s in September of 2013, I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to do the program because I was too fat and too old.
At my heaviest, I weighed 375 pounds. I was on medication for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and was diagnosed with diabetes. Before starting the program I lost a considerable amount of weight, but wanted to lose more. After my 10–week session at Farrell’s I lost an additional 27 pounds and have been able to successfully keep it off and then some. Not only that, I’m now medication free! I give a lot of credit to my coach Jenny Adelmund for pushing me to set, strive, and achieve my goals, which includes having perfect attendance in my 10–week session. Before Farrell’s I was never much of a runner, but would run 5k’s here and there. I would cross the finish line somewhere around 43 minutes. Now I can run a 5k in 32 minutes, which is with no training outside of the Farrell’s kickboxing classes and strength training. I have now made the crazy decision to run across the state of Iowa with a team from Ames Farrell’s in Relay Iowa.
I am more motivated now than ever to be fit and healthy. My age doesn’t get me down anymore, even though there are times where I wish I were treated more like an old man in class, but the other members don’t allow that. Every day in class you can hear people yelling “No pain, Dale!” or “You’re not tired!” and my response is “I AM NOT TIRED!” I have continued with the program so I can keep up with my three grandchildren, be medication free, and feel healthy every day.
I encourage everyone to give the program a try, no matter how big or old you are. I have made great friends that hold me accountable for coming to class every day and push me to my level 10. If I can give my level 10 every day at Farrell’s, I know that you can too!
