I Only Regret I Didn’t Start Farrell’s Sooner!
Hi, my name is Brian. I wanted to start working out so that I could have a healthier lifestyle, and not get winded walking up the stairs in my own house. I also didn’t want all the health problems that come with being overweight. My weight was impacting my entire life . . . work, family, self-esteem, etc. Yes, I tried working out by myself, I even tried going to a normal gym and that just didn’t work for me. I wasn’t pushing myself hard enough at home. At the gym I felt so out of place that I would just ride the stationary bike for 10 minutes and go home. At that point I was convinced nothing would work for me. Then I heard about Farrell’s from my buddy Kyle who heard about it from some friends. They talked about sweaty workouts and some of them were getting great results. We both debated for about four or five 10-week sessions before we finally signed up. Yep, it took me over a year before I finally made the commitment.
I really had no idea what was to come. I was uncertain on whether I could commit, whether I could workout with other people; I didn’t know what to think. I wasn’t really prepared for what was lying ahead of me. I remember doing those push-ups and sit-ups at testing during orientation and that was the time I said enough is enough. The testing was one thing, but once the first day of kickboxing rolled around I couldn’t even finish the workout. I had to stop halfway through and sit out for the rest of the class. Yep, the first day I lasted about 20 minutes. As I sat there I thought to myself, how am I going to make it through the next 10 weeks if I can’t do one day? Yes, I thought about quitting right there, but one of the members looked me in the face after class and told me to stay focused. That’s all I needed. Any doubt was erased and I was committed to finish this thing no matter what.
The next challenge was going to be my nutrition. I was never one to skip on seconds or thirds but learning to eat six small meals a day would be hard. Once again I was committing myself to the whole program. Once I learned my target carbs and protein the nutrition got easier. When I had that down my mood got better and I had a lot more energy during the day.
When I was younger I played sports and after practice I would get really bad headaches. I know now it was because of my nutrition and probably a dehydration issue. Now that I had my nutrition right, my workouts got better and I was able to push myself to new limits. No more headaches after workouts and for the first time after a workout I felt unbelievable. I didn’t think you could feel this way after a workout. During my 10 weeks I lost 35 lbs. and 5% body fat and was really starting to feel better about myself. No, I wasn’t a $1,000 winner, and quite honestly, I didn’t care. I knew I had accomplished a lot.
Once my 10 weeks was over I knew I needed to continue with Farrell’s. It would have been easy to be satisfied with those 10-week results, but I knew I had just scratched the surface of where I could go. I was challenged by Farrell’s staff not to be satisfied. I still had goals I wanted to hit and now I had some new friends that I wanted to continue to hang out and workout with. The instructors make the workouts fun with their personality and always wanting to see you improve. It really makes you feel like you’re a part of something bigger than just a gym. Everyone at Farrell’s really wants you to succeed and reach your goals in fitness and in life.
Thanks to Farrell’s I was able to make life changes that have greatly extended my life and the quality of my days. They also have given me a level of fitness I didn’t think I could ever get to. I will say there is one thing I regret . . . that I didn’t start sooner. My wife has now joined Farrell’s too and we enjoy doing this together. She didn’t have much weight to lose when she started, but she too had great results and reduced her body fat by 5%. This has become our lifestyle. We have started coaching now and it’s our desire to have an impact on others. I hope my story will inspire others to commit long-term and be accountable to their fitness. Working out is such a journey and I know there are ups and downs just like everything else in life, but being engaged with a fitness program that works and with people who are sincerely interested in my success is why I come every day. It’s about hard work, nutrition, and being committed long-term.
