Because of Farrell’s, I Feel Alive Again!
The biggest roller coaster of my life started on Sunday, April 6th, 2014. I spent the day with my best friend and my mom at a bridal walk for my upcoming wedding. One of the most beautiful days you could ask for. I woke up that day feeling amazing and ended that day in the ER being prepped for emergency surgery. An ulcer had perforated my stomach and my world was turned upside down. That day left me with half a stomach and a nine-inch incision that sliced my entire abdominal muscles in half. I later learned how serious things were. I was lucky to have what was left of my stomach, let alone my life. My doctor told me it would take a minimum of 12 months to heal, and that the first three months did not count. Once released from the ICU, I could not get out of bed by myself for four months. I could not walk up stairs or pick up a gallon of milk for three months or wear real pants for two months – I had run my first half marathon literally a month before this happened and that was certainly out of the question for as far as I could see.
Moving forward from this point I realized that I was lucky to be alive, but did not feel quite alive any more. I had always been a confident, spunky, and independent person. My confidence was completely gone and I had to depend on everyone for everything. I could no longer workout as my body was just too damaged to enter back into a normal routine and especially not one with exercise. During this recovery time I gained more and more weight and lost more and more of who I was. My body and mind had been hurt more than ever before.
It was finally just over a year from surgery and I was itching to get back to my old self, but had no idea how to do that. I had never gone through something like this before, so how was I to know what to do to fix it? I happened to come across an ad on Facebook for Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping. I clicked on it for days, looking at it but thinking there was NO way I could go from zero to that – impossible. Finally after toying with the idea I reached out to Rod, the owner of the Naperville location, for more information. I think I was hoping he would say given my situation there was no way and to not bother. Right off the bat he was super welcoming. He simply told me it was not where I started, but where I ended that mattered. That hit home for me more than I thought it could and was the start of the upward tick in the roller coaster. After coming in and meeting Rod I realized, this was not a scary gym where judgment ran the show. This was a support system that truly wants to see you succeed. Once I began my 10-week challenge the support system only grew. Classmates helping classmates, instructors bringing me to new levels I never thought I would see again and a coach, Steve Lohman, who was there for me through the whole experience. At the end of the day knowing that there was a coach there that truly cared whether you win or fail on this journey makes it or breaks it – in my opinion.
After just 10 weeks I am the confident fun person I was before the “crash” in 2014. I have lost weight, toned up, and for the first time in my entire life I have muscles I can actually see in my arms and legs. My incision scar is healthier and softer than ever, I can do crunches for the first time in over a year, and I feel amazing! What I thought was impossible and maybe too much for me, was exactly what I needed to get my life back. Because of Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping I feel alive again – I feel whole again. I am the best version of myself that I have ever been. This was a transformation of my body and mind.
