Newfound Strength Across the Pond
One thing we love about our FXB Columbus members is the great diversity in their backgrounds. We have members from all over the U.S., England, Mexico, Japan, Trinidad, China, India, Argentina, and Scotland, to name just a few places of origin. Each member brings something special and unique to the FXB family when they walk through our doors, but the mat is a place where we all discover our sameness, our connectedness, and how alike we really are. We work together, sweat together, get stronger together, and we’re all pursuing the same goal of living a healthy life with purpose.
Sarah B. is one of our FXB family members from England. She came to Columbus, IN with her husband, Mark, and two sons, Callum and Harry, when Mark accepted a new position with his company. Sarah had never lived far from her home in Daventry, Northamptonshire, and it was a daunting move to say the least. Just months after moving to a new country, Sarah decided to join Farrell’s for the Fall 2014 session. To say this decision was uncharacteristic for Sarah is an understatement! As she’ll have no problem telling you, she disliked exercise, and getting sweaty and dirty were not her ideas of fun.
She began her 10-Week Challenge totally out of her element, but the thing about Sarah is she embodies so many of the Farrell’s core values. Just check the back of the FXB Student Manual, and you will see Sarah reflected there, discipline, integrity, courage, commitment, dedication, indomitable spirit, and perseverance. She had perfect attendance in her 10 weeks and brought life and team spirit to the first ever 12:00 p.m. class at FXB Columbus. She made steady progress and became noticeably more fit week by week. At the end of the session, her coaches had a special certificate made just for her, the “Strong and Sassy” award.
Sarah continued as a FIT member with complete dedication. She rarely missed a class, and she became a high-energy coach for the noon class 10-Weekers. It’s not a normal day at FXB Columbus without Sarah’s 4’11” frame and cheerful English accent in the building. Her never-waning hard work and positivity on the mat are an inspiration to her classmates and to the teams she has coached.
But Sarah wasn’t done achieving new goals. The self-proclaimed “hater-of-running” went on to run her first 5K charity race to raise support for autism awareness, a developmental disorder that she and her family have faithfully learned to navigate with her younger son, Harry. This run was close to her heart, and she attributed it to the well-earned endurance she gained at FXB.
She also conquered the Indianapolis Spartan Sprint, a nearly 5-mile obstacle race, with husband Mark and a whole group of her new FXB family; not bad for someone who disliked mud and exercise!
In the course of a year, Sarah has lost over 25 pounds, and 18% of her body weight. She is in her fourth session of coaching new students, and most recently she has begun training to be an FXB instructor. FXB Columbus is looking forward to having “Strong and Sassy” Sarah on the mic leading classes and changing lives for a long time to come. There’s no telling what this awesome woman will do next!
