Farrell’s Has Become My “Me Time”

before_after pic croppedI spent most of my life reed thin (aka real thin). I could eat what I wanted, drink what I wanted, skip exercising, and as a mother of six, I could still rock a bikini in my 40s…and then I quit smoking at age 42 and gained 75 pounds in 8 months.

Six months before I joined Farrell’s, I turned 50.  I was overweight, out of shape, and trying to convince myself that it was okay to love a bigger me—social media says I’m supposed to! Then my doctor put me on Spiriva—a steroid inhaler for my lungs because I couldn’t go up a flight of stairs without running out of breath.  I guess that would have been okay, but the only bathroom in my house is on the second floor. The struggle was real.

Ryan and Jessica at FXB Cedar Falls had been after me and after me to join Farrell’s—“You’ll love it” they said. “No, you won’t be in pain,” they said (liars—both of them!). “Just give it a try, if you hate it we’ll leave you alone.” So my friend, Ricky, and I tried it. We were intimidated to say the least.  But we survived and afterward, my lungs felt amazing.

Still, I joined with mixed feelings.  I don’t like pain, my lungs were horrible, I hated adding another commitment in my life, and it is just so easy to be overweight and out of shape.  But I was tired of waiting for the weight to miraculously fall off while doing nothing about it.  It was time for a change.

Boy did I change!!  I LOVE my Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping sessions! I can’t imagine why I fought going all of these years. I have an hour to myself with no one demanding anything from me.  I get to release my tension, anger, boredom—whatever, by beating up on an inanimate object that doesn’t talk back.  All while people cheer me on for doing it! What could be better?

My body is in the best shape it has been in since I played basketball in high school.  At the end of my 10-weeks, my push-ups increased 7-fold,  I more than doubled my sit-ups, my mile run was 1:48 better than when I started, and I lost a total of 20.75 inches off of my body. YAY ME!!

The biggest change for me though, was Spiriva—the inhaler that I had become dependent upon to walk up a flight of stairs. The Rx for that cost $320 per month and I have a $1500 annual deductible.   At week 5, I gave it up.  I no longer needed it and my lungs feel AMAZING! I run up the stairs now and I can chase my grandkids repeatedly around the block without having to stop.

Farrell’s has become my “me time”.  My husband is so supportive because he sees the emotional change in me.  My coaches, Sheri and Angie, absolutely ROCKED!  They were incredible with food advice, correcting my technique so I was working out correctly (shout out to Molly here too), and they have been great cheerleaders!!  But mostly, I love going because of all the fabulous people I have met there.  Everyone always has a smile, and a hello.  We encourage each other without judgment, and we’re all having FUN.
