We Learned the Secret Ingredient
In December of 2012, Gwen and I were at a crossroads. After months of diligently getting up every morning to log our 45 minutes on the elliptical or treadmill, we were seeing no results. In fact, we weren’t even maintaining and that, as you can imagine, was beyond frustrating. So, when Gwen mentioned to me that there was a gym in town she thought we should look into, I was all for it. Turns out that gym was Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping.
We visited the gym and learned more about the program. We were both a little nervous, but also excited because the program included the things we needed the most: resistance training and nutrition. We were always “cardio people” and understood that we needed to incorporate weight training and nutrition into our cardio routine in order to see results. The problem was we never could find the motivation to do so. Farrell’s offered that to us and provided the accountability we needed to keep that motivation strong. Plus, it was a 10 week program and, unlike most gyms where there is no “end goal”, the 10 weeks gave us something to work towards and commit to. We signed up on the spot.
The reality of our situation didn’t really set in until after we took our initial photos. We had gone out to eat for one last hurrah before our session started and Gwen was very quiet. I looked across the table and noticed tears in her eyes. I didn’t need to ask to know what she was thinking because I was thinking the same thing: how did I let myself get to this point? I had no motivation. I was tired and grouchy. My clothes didn’t fit and I had lost the confidence to change my situation. At that moment, I looked Gwen right in the eye and said “We’ve just taken the hardest step and now all we need to do is continue to move forward.”
Well, nearly four years later we’re still moving forward! Gwen was the thousand dollar winner in our 10-week session and we were both shocked at the changes we had in such a short time. We both lost inches, built muscle, and were physically stronger and healthier. And we continue to make changes to this day. Gwen has lost – and kept off – 30 pounds, more than 10 inches off her waist, and has reduced her body fat percentage by nearly 10 percent. I’ve reduced my body fat percentage more than 8 percent and can do more push-ups on my toes in a minute today than I could do on my knees when we first started. Best yet, we not only were able to get back into our clothes after our 10-week session, we’ve since had to buy new clothes in sizes we never thought we’d see again. But as wonderful as the physical transformation has been, it’s the emotional transformation that has had the most unexpected impact. We’re both happier, emotionally healthier, mentally stronger, and have the confidence back we lost so long ago. This emotional transformation has given us the courage to do things we never thought we’d do, including becoming FXB coaches and instructors.
Physical and emotional transformations aside, none of this could have happened without the one secret ingredient FXB throws in to their recipe of success: the support. The support Gwen and I received throughout our 10 week journey – and still receive to this day – is the game-changer, and it is the greatest gift this program has given us. This support comes from our teammates, coaches, instructors, FIT members, and all of the lifelong friends we have made along the way. It is the support of the FXB Lincoln community that is the true differentiator and the reason we are still motivated to not only bring our best to the gym every day but to encourage and support others to do the same.
Gwen and I walked in to FXB looking for a jump start to get us back on track. What we ended up with, however, was so much more than we could have ever imagined.
