My New Level Ten!
It was my first kickboxing class. I remember putting my wraps on when someone behind me poked me on the shoulder and said, “you ready to get your butt kicked?” The next thing I remember after that was dripping in sweat and being completely out of breath. After that class had ended one of the instructors, Steph, came up to me and asked what I thought. As I was trying to catch my breath I uttered the words, “level ten.”
I had always considered myself to be in very good shape. How could I not be? I have a physically demanding job, two wonderful, trouble-making kids at home to chase around, and I was lifting weights four times a week. I was practicing everything I had been taught as far as fitness was concerned. That was my “level ten”, or so I thought.
It was early December of 2014. Seeing as how I had turned 30-years-old that year and never had my cholesterol checked I thought it would be a good idea to schedule an appointment to get that done. The morning of the appointment, my wife asked me if I was nervous at all. I told her that I didn’t have anything to be nervous about. I told her I was in great shape and there was nothing to worry about. This was going to be a textbook exam. Now before I go any further I must tell you that my wife had been doing this Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping thing for a little over a year at that point and had been trying to get me to join as well. A new session would come around and every time I would give her the same response – those colored rubber bands and kickboxing cannot replace my weights. Back to 2014. I walked into the doctor’s office to get my cholesterol results. As soon as he came into the room, I could tell by the look on his face it wasn’t good news. He informed me my cholesterol level was at a point where if I didn’t do something about it I was going to have to be put on medicine. I was devastated. All of that hard work in the gym seemed like it was just wasted time. I got in my car to go home and the first thing I heard on the radio was an advertisement for a new 10-week session for Farrells eXtreme Bodyshaping. I got home and the first thing out of my mouth was, “sign me up, now.”
Orientation day arrived and I couldn’t have been more nervous. Doing push-ups and sit-ups, taking measurements and my weight in front of all of these people was something I definitely wasn’t prepared for. After all of the paperwork was done we sat down and listened to Flynn tell his amazing Farrell’s story. It was right then that I realized that I was missing the two biggest parts of my fitness life, proper nutrition and consistency. The weeks flew by and after every week I could see and feel my body changing. The workouts were amazing and so were the people. Everyone there was pushing each other to reach their Level Ten and get the absolute most out of the workout. Week 10 testing came and I had the complete opposite feeling that I did from week one. I was so excited to see how exactly my body had transformed. I went from 235 lbs. down to 225 lbs., lost 3.5% body fat and I went from 42 push-ups to 84 push-ups.
It’s called bodyshaping for a reason. It’s not a weight-loss program or some crazy fad diet thing. It’s a lifestyle. It’s not about the dial on the scale going down, it’s about you reaching your goals and seeing the number around your waist go down. The coaches and instructors at Farrell’s are so amazing. I could not have stayed as disciplined with my diet or showing up to every class if it wasn’t for their positive attitudes. Just remember, everything you want is on the other side of fear. You will be sore and sometimes you will want to quit. You will wake up the next day and think to yourself, why in the world do I put myself through this? I’m here to tell you, when you get those pictures after your final testing, you won’t need to wonder anymore. The smile on your face from seeing all of your hard work will be all the justification you will ever need.
