I Had To Change. My Life Depended On It.

I’ve struggled with my weight for many years, but at the end of 2014, I had reached my all time high of 242 pounds being only 5’4”. When traveling for work, I would try to discreetly request a seat belt extension on the airplane, but would quickly be humiliated by the flight attendant who seemed more annoyed by the request than accommodating. I was wearing my old maternity clothes or anything that had stretch in it just to be comfortable. I hated shopping and would never try clothes on in the store as that would mean that I would have to face myself in a full length mirror in the dressing room.

I was doing well in my career and was just promoted into a Director position. All my energy was being put into my new job leaving little time for my family or for myself after long 14+ hour days. I’d come home at 9:00 – 10:00 at night after not eating all day and end up eating a frozen pizza for dinner because it was fast and easy. There were a couple occasions where I hadn’t eaten for three days straight because of my busy schedule. Before joining Farrell’s, I can’t remember the last time I had a glass of water. My typical beverage was Coke Zero, and water was just used to rinse my mouth out after brushing my teeth. After many years of abuse to my body, I started experiencing blackouts and fainting on a regular basis along with heart palpitations. I knew that if I wanted to live and be there for my daughter and husband, something HAD TO CHANGE, and it COULDN’T BE TEMPORARY! This needed to be a lifestyle change, but with so little time, how was I going to do it?

That’s when I found Farrell’s Woodbury, MN! A friend of mine at work had joined another location and was seeing amazing results in a short 10-week period of time. She also struggled with dieting and exercise in the past and was changing as a person (both inside and out) right before my eyes. I thought, “10 weeks. . . I can commit to 10 weeks.” I wasn’t sure what would happen at the end of 10 weeks, but I was willing to start my journey and find out!

I was nervous talking to my husband about the initial expense of the program. What if I failed? Would the investment have been a waste? Little did I know then that the investment being made would be PRICELESS in the end!

I signed up on Black Friday without ever seeing a class or really knowing what I was getting myself into. Once I had made the first step, I waited with anticipation until I could start the next session in January. Saturday, January 10th 2015 finally came! I remember being nauseous on my drive to the gym that morning . . . full of excitement, hope, and, yes . . . FEAR!

I vividly remember my first day of kickboxing class and crawling on my hands and knees to reach my water bottle. The water that I had previously disregarded, I now was coveting. I was gasping for breath so hard that I was unable to take a drink from my bottle. Oddly enough, this did not discourage me. My lack of strength and endurance drove me to fight even harder. I was not going to be defeated by this any longer! For the first 10 weeks the sound of the Farrell’s instructor’s words would echo through my head, “What’s your reason why?” “Are you giving it your level 10?” These words resounded in me day after day, punch after punch, kick after kick. My reason why was my family, and I wanted to live a full and long life with them and no longer just “exist.”

I just completed my year with Farrell’s and lost 75 pounds and almost 5 feet from my body!* I went from a size 22/24 to an 8/10. Another way of looking at it is that I lost as much as my 11-year old daughter! Most importantly though, I lost that “old” me! The one that had sadness in her eyes. The one that was always so stressed out at work and never had any time or energy once I got home to spend time with the important people in my life . . . my family. I’ve lost weight in the past but only to put it back on. What I found at Farrell’s was a network of support from people just like me who truly want to see me succeed. I finally felt that I belonged to something, something important.

(Individual results may vary.)

After seeing my commitment and transformation over my first 10 weeks, my husband joined Farrell’s, as well. Working out together and supporting each other has brought another level to our marriage that I couldn’t have imagined. We are more active and doing things together as a family. I am also proud that I am giving my daughter one of the greatest gifts that a parent can give and that is teaching her not only proper nutrition and exercise habits, but also having the courage and tenacity to face and conquer change!

While I still haven’t completed my journey, I am so thankful to the instructors, coaches and friends at Farrell’s and the network of support and encouragement that I have received along the way. I now have the opportunity to pay it forward and am enjoying being a mentor/coach to others and watching them succeed and grow in their own goals.

I still have the pressures and stress that life brings, but now have a healthy outlet to deal with them. I have gained the confidence to make myself a priority and have found a balance between all the hats that I wear. I am truly living life at level 10!
