Farrell’s Made Me Ready to Fight!
I signed up for the Farrell’s summer session of 2015 with the desire to gain some muscle and strength. I wasn’t terribly overweight, but I was out of shape and my nutrition was lacking. As the program began I jumped in wholeheartedly. I followed the diet and didn’t miss a class. After three weeks I really began to notice a change in my energy levels. I felt great. Waking up at 4:30am wasn’t a struggle because I knew big changes were happening. At the five-week testing I was shocked to learn that I had lost 5% of my body fat; the most of anyone at my location. But then, three days later, I learned that I had breast cancer.
I never expected to be diagnosed with cancer at the age of 37. But that’s what happened. I measure my diagnosis and early days of treatment by the weeks of my Farrell’s session. I received my diagnosis on the Tuesday of week 6. I had a bilateral mastectomy on the Friday of week 7. By week 9 I felt great and was back at Farrell’s exactly two weeks after my surgery. I will forever credit Farrell’s as the main reason why I was able to recover from major surgery so quickly. My body was the healthiest it had been in years. It was ready to fight. No excuses.
My Farrell’s team was so supportive. They pinked out the gym on my last day before my mastectomy. They sent flowers to the hospital and sent encouraging words. The ownership was very generous when a benefit was held for me. I am beyond grateful for that.
Chemotherapy started on the Friday of week 10. I struggled to go to Farrell’s during chemo, but I sure tried! When chemo finally ended after 20 very long weeks, I was ready to get back in shape. My body had been through a lot. When I started Farrell’s I never thought my body transformation would include my breasts being amputated, losing all of my hair, and experiencing drastic weight loss and gain. When I returned I was weak, but so incredibly grateful to just be there. And now, six months post-chemo and two surgeries later (and one more to come), when I lay on the floor and stare at the ceiling (yes, that sometimes happens) I think back to the days when I couldn’t even get out of bed. Every punch, kick, burpee, and squat is a celebration of what my body can do.
My Farrell’s story is a little different. I don’t have the most amazing before and after pictures. I didn’t even finish my 10-week session. But Farrell’s helped me fight cancer. And that’s pretty amazing.
