Using Less Insulin Because of Farrell’s!
When I first stepped foot into Farrell’s I was ready for a change. I didn’t think I was in all that bad of shape since I had been running six miles, three or more days a week on a treadmill at a local gym. I enjoyed running a couple 5 and 10ks a year to maintain motivation to keep running, but I was really getting bored with treadmills!
Although I was ready for a change, I was extremely scared of it. I’m a Type 1 diabetic that was diagnosed and have been on insulin shots since my early teens. In my 20’s I went on an insulin pump that helped maintain my blood sugar levels, but any change in my level of activity or diet generally led to a roller coaster of high and low blood sugars. To succeed at Farrell’s I needed to alter my diet and level of activity, at the same time!
On day one my body fat was at 27.4 percent. I lowered the rate of insulin my pump delivered and monitored my sugar levels closely. My wife helped me follow the Farrell’s nutritional guidelines by preparing meals that were much healthier than I had been consuming. Protein levels were increased, carbs decreased. Portions stayed close to previous levels if not slightly larger. Nutrition was, and is, the hard thing for me. The workouts are challenging, but a lot of fun. I love the fact that the classes are full of people at all levels of fitness. It doesn’t matter where you are starting from, or are currently at, we’re all working to be better!
The coaches and instructors at Farrell’s tell you not to look at the scale. We’re supposed to just monitor progress through strength improvements and how our clothes fit. I didn’t do so well with this advice. I stepped on the scale almost daily. After three weeks of no weight loss and being tired from getting up at 4:30am each morning to make the 5am class I was feeling very discouraged! I was very close to giving up. Then something started happening. I got used to getting up at that time every day so I wasn’t so tired, plus my body started responding and the scale began moving in the right direction!
At the end of 10 weeks my body fat had dropped to just under 17%. I had lost 35 pounds and felt terrific.* The largest change I noticed was the amount of insulin I needed was less than half what I was using previously. I watched blood sugar levels carefully and had only one low in the first week. Changing activity level and nutrition at the same time was what I had never done before, and it worked!

I am now approaching one year of following the Farrell’s program. With little to no running over the past year my 10k pace has increased from 10-minute miles to sub 9 minutes!
I was given the opportunity to coach a group of new 10-week members in the last session. It was fun encouraging a group of men that had their own stories on why they were there. The improvements I saw from them and other 10-weekers is yet more motivation to continue on my Farrell’s journey!
