Farrell’s Doesn’t Let You Give Up
On a Sunday morning in April, my fitness journey began without me even realizing it at the time. It was not every Sunday that my wife requested a newspaper, but for some reason she wanted me to pick up our local newspaper from the gas station while I was purchasing doughnuts and soda for breakfast. As I was thumbing through the pages, I saw an article about a man named Bryan Moorman and how he went from flabby to fit through a gym called Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping.
I have to say that my entire life I have been bigger. Not always as overweight as I was at this point, but I was never really fit and was always bigger than my siblings and most of my friends. I loved food to the point where my family nicknamed me the garbage disposal at dinnertime because I would eat whatever was left over after everyone else was done. I had dieted and “worked out” at various times in my life with mixed results that would never stick around. At this point in my life I needed something to get me into shape; I was about 250 pounds, could not bend over to tie my shoes without being winded, and was experiencing nerve issues in one of my legs due to being overweight and sitting all day at an office. I have a nine-year-old son that is very active and I did not want to be the dad that can’t play and keep up with his son, and I was fast approaching that path. My diet and lack of activity were not doing me any favors and I knew that something had to change. The Bryan Moorman article came along at just the right time.
I was very hesitant about making the commitment to Farrell’s simply because I have a very busy schedule and did not think that my fitness warranted a portion of my limited time. I have a full-time job, go to school full-time, have a home to keep up, and a child that is involved in many sports. Any free time I have is limited. When I contacted Farrell’s Columbus to learn more about the program, I found out that it only takes 45 minutes a day and that they have early morning classes. I decided that I needed to look further into the program and try out a few classes. Lindsay Piper got me signed up to try out a few classes. My first class would be the 6am kickboxing class. I had no clue what I was getting into. Pam Green, who now is an owner at Farrell’s Bloomington, got me set up with wraps, gloves, the step test, and all the paperwork. She found a fit member, Paul S., to help me out in my first class. I did my best to keep up, which was impossible, but got a very good workout in and I didn’t die, even if I thought that I was going to. The next day I tried out a resistance class at 5am. All the fit members were very helpful in making sure that my form was correct and encouraging me to keep at it. At this point, I knew that Farrell’s was right for me.
That weekend was the initial testing day, and I was amazed at how many other people were there, in the same situation as me, trying to get fit and feel better about themselves. The other thing that amazed me, and still does, is the way FIT members welcome the 10-weekers and help them through the process of getting comfortable and achieve their personal goals, the encouragement is unbelievable. My initial testing was a big reality check for me. My weight, body fat percentage, and whatnot were higher than what I thought they were. The fact that I was only able to do nine sit-ups in one minute was really a wow moment. I had no idea that I had let myself go this far. After the testing and the nutrition seminar, I was determined to crush this 10 weeks, reach my goals, and stay on the nutrition program through the duration.
That Monday, it all started and I never looked back. Nervous, overwhelmed, and very unsure of what I was doing, the warm-ups started and the more the class went on, the more and more comfortable I got, to the point where everything started to work how it was supposed to. I felt, for the first time, that I was going to get through it and succeed. My Coaches, Stephanie S. and Brian S., were there the entire time, encouraging me to keep going, answering any questions that I had, and letting me know that they noticed how hard I was working. Without all the encouragement from them and all the other FIT members, I would have given up on this just like I had on all my other fitness programs before, but Farrell’s is different. They don’t let you give up.
I was very pleased with my 10-week results. My nerve pain was gone, I no longer got winded tying my shoes, and I could now keep up with my son. Even though I didn’t win the $1,000 for that session, I had won my fitness and a more pain-free life. During the awards ceremony, Stephanie and Brian, with the help of Darrin F., who finished last year’s National 10K Challenge in the top 10, talked me into joining the 10K challenge. The best quote came from Darrin, “What do you have to lose? If you don’t win, you’re out 50 bucks and in the best shape of your life. If you win, you’re in the best shape of your life and $10,000 richer. Either way you win.” Challenge accepted. I signed up as a FIT member with a renewed goal of winning the Farrell’s National Challenge. I started working even harder and being even stricter about what I used to fuel my body. I would work the carb and protein numbers out to where I would hit my numbers on the dot for every meal. I had rededicated myself to being the best me I could be.
Throughout the entire year, I felt like I had my own cheering squad. Everyone in the 6am class would ask me about how it was going, how long I had left, and truly showed an interest in my fitness. They were always sure to tell me how great I was doing, and that I was inspiring to them, which still blows my mind. Everyone at Farrell’s inspires me and is my motivation to work harder and never stop on my fitness journey. I could not have obtained the results that I have without the help from all of the coaches, instructors, and fellow FXB members. I have to especially thank Stephanie, Brian, Darrin, the Piper’s, and Brittany for all the help and encouragement that they have provided over the past year. Also I couldn’t have achieved the results I have without everyone who partnered with me on the bag, pushing me to go past my limit, and not letting me give up during workouts. Farrell’s is what a fitness facility should be. I cannot call it a gym because it is more than that. It is a fitness family, and one who genuinely cares about their family members.
