My name is Kara DePaoli, I am 34-years-old and am a mother of two boys (Will and Ben) with my husband Joe. I decided to join Farrell’s Bettendorf because it was something new and different. I have tried lots of different things related to the diet fads, gym memberships and even attempted weight loss and improving my health on my own. Most of the time what I found was the diets could last for a short period of time, but they were unrealistic to sustain in everyday life. Let’s be honest, life happens. Social gatherings occur, holiday meals. It just got too difficult to actually be able to resist all the temptations.
I was at a point where I had decided that I needed to do something different when I heard a commercial on the radio that there was going to be a Farrell’s opening up in Bettendorf. I knew a friend from high school who is a partner at one of the Farrell’s in a different location. I began to inquire about what exactly this program was and why it was successful. He shared with me the philosophy and basics behind Farrell’s. The biggest thing that I worried about was could I actually do it. After talking with my friend from high school and a few others, I decided I was going to go ahead and go for it. I signed up for the 10-week challenge, but made sure I convinced a few friends to join me, too. I didn’t want to do this alone.
I never realized how far I had let myself go. I was overweight, exhausted and really could care less what I looked like and felt like. I had nothing to lose, and hoped to gain everything to get healthier. I have a history of some anxiety and was using medication to help with that. Add in a little bit of depression, I struggled to find things I enjoyed doing, other than spending time with my husband and kids. It was time for a change and soon enough it began.
Day one at Farrell’s was not what I expected, in a good way. I walked in and was so incredibly nervous. Nervous about if I made the right decision, nervous that these “fit people” would look at me and think that I had no right to be in “their gym.” But thankfully, the exact opposite happened. When you are told it’s a no judgment zone . . . it really is. People greeted me with a smile, welcomed me and asked how I was doing. They seemed genuinely interested in the fact that I had decided to make a change for myself, that I had new goals. I may have doubted myself, but they didn’t seem to doubt that this was the right place for me to be. The coolest part of this group, this fit family—they welcomed me in with open arms, from day one . . . and it continues, to this day. They cared about my goals and my own journey. How amazing that feeling is! I have people who want me to do well and challenge me, outside of my immediate family.
My goal of course was to win the $1,000 and be the biggest transformation. Who doesn’t want free money right. Really what did I want? I wanted ME back. I wanted to feel good, be confident in my own skin, have energy and just plain old not feel like crap anymore. I wanted to be one of those people who didn’t make excuses, one of those “gym people” who loved what they did. Day in and day out, the workouts challenged me. They made me work hard, mentally and physically. Some days were easier than others, some days were really tough to make it through, but I found that I craved more. I did everything I could to MAKE it to class instead of SKIP classes like I used to do in the past with workouts. I craved the energy and motivation that I earned from going to class.
At first I was worried how I would make it to classes. We all have insanely busy schedules right?! I work full-time, have two very active boys, have a household, etc., etc., etc. After attending a few classes, I realized how important Farrell’s was to me –how it made me feel so much better and more energetic. Well, now 10 weeks has come and gone and I cannot believe how much better I feel. My family notices a difference, my employees I work with notice a change and most importantly I notice a change. I find myself talking about Farrell’s all the time to anyone who will listen. I found what I loved and what worked for me and want others to feel the same awesome feeling!
During my 10 weeks I was able to lose 11.9 lbs., 6% body fat, doubled my push-ups from my first class and nearly doubled my sit-ups.* With the help of a teammate who ran with me at final testing day, I ran the mile in 8:47. I haven’t been anywhere close to running that time since close to high school.
I owe Farrell’s Bettendorf so much, I can’t begin to thank Pete and the Farrell’s family enough. Because of this program, my health has improved, my mood is more positive. I have more energy and motivation than I have had in a very long time. Because of this program, my husband has the woman that he married back, my children have a mom who doesn’t want to just lay around on the couch, but instead wants to go outside and play games and chase after them. They have a mom who is even a little less irritable when times get chaotic.
Even though my 10-week challenge is over, my journey has just begun. I have a newfound love for myself again and my health. I have signed up to be a FIT member and am looking forward to seeing where my journey takes me. Overall I’d love to lose about 20 more pounds and bring my body fat percent down by at least 10-15% more, but it will all happen in due time. The best part is, I know my Farrell’s FIT family will continue to help me get there. THIS IS MY YEAR… Living life at level 10!
