My “Worth It” Journey at Farrell’s!
My name is Brittanie and I am a FIT member at Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping in Bettendorf, Iowa. I started my Farrell’s journey in January of 2017. I am not a gym girl; in fact six months ago I would have told you that I wasn’t an exercise girl. I’ve tried several local gyms and diet after diet after diet. None of the programs lasted more than a few weeks and none of the diets more than a few days.
I am a busy mom of two boys, Robert is 8 and Elliott is one. In April of 2016, I got engaged. When I saw the photos from that night, I didn’t see happiness or excitement. I saw big arms and how huge I was. Something that I had looked forward to for so long was overshadowed by my self-esteem. Unfortunately, that wasn’t a rare occasion. In the coming months, I began planning my upcoming wedding. I put dress shopping off as long as I could because I was so unhappy with the way that I looked. I had two beautiful, healthy and happy children, an amazing fiancé, a wonderful job, a tight knit group of friends who were supportive but still, I just wasn’t happy. I couldn’t look in a mirror. I didn’t want to do simple things like get ready for work because I hated looking at myself. I should have been right in the middle of the happiest time of my life and I just wasn’t. I’d gone as far as visiting my family doctor in November of 2016 and was prescribed weight loss medication. I was pre diabetic, morbidly obese had borderline hypertension and was depressed, struggling with anxiety, and honestly in the worst place mentally I’d been in years. I didn’t feel like I was worth it anymore. Not worth the time or energy to make things right.
A friend of mine expressed interest in joining Farrell’s and before I knew it, I’d taken the plunge and signed up. Little did I know, that Facebook messenger conversation would completely change my life. I walked through the doors thinking I would (maybe) complete the 10-week challenge and maybe lose a few pounds prior to our April 2017 wedding. My expectations of my ability to do the kickboxing and strength training program were low. In the back of my mind I thought how wonderful it would be to go from my current size 14 jeans to a size 8. My goal at that time was to complete 75% of the workouts and hopefully start to feel a little better about myself.
From the day Farrell’s Bettendorf opened its doors I knew that it was different than other things I’d done before. Kickboxing is intense and the strength training resistance bands are difficult. However, my team was there to support me day in and day out, keeping my accountable. The people who have supported me unconditionally since day one have become some of my closest friends. They’ve seen me in my weakest moments and have never let me give up. Pete, the manager, was always there to support and teach not only myself but all of us. His “dig deep” comments always seem to come at the perfect moment, like he can sense it in the room. Because we were the original 10-week participants, we quickly became each other’s coaches as well. My favorite part about Farrell’s is the friendships I’ve formed. Strangers six months ago are now lifelong friends.
I have cried on their shoulders and celebrated some of the happiest and proudest moments of my life with them. Moments that weren’t my children’s or my husbands, just mine.
During my initial 10-week session I attended class 58 out of 60 times, smashing my 75% attendance goal. I lost nearly 12 inches from my body and about 5.5% body fat.* I lost those size 14 jeans along with several pairs of size 12’s and 10’s as well. The day after my 10-week celebration I stood in a dressing room and cried putting a pair of size 8 jeans on. A “that will never happen” goal that I accomplished. My physical transformation was beyond my wildest dreams, but my mental and emotional one was something i didn’t expect. I’m no longer depressed, which is something I’d struggled with since I was a preteen. Anxiety is no longer a part of my everyday life. I am finally in the average BMI range. My blood work shows no signs of diabetes or hypertension. I am, for the first time in my adult life, in shape because of hard work and a healthy diet.
Farrell’s has given me the confidence to be proud of the person that I am. To wipe my feet at the door and for 45 minutes, six times a week my mind is clear. I am just Brittanie, sweating it all out. More than anything, Farrell’s gave my husband the wife he deserves and my wonderful children the Mom they deserve. This program has literally changed my entire life for the better. I know now that I am worth it. I’m so exited and proud to continue on my “worth it” journey with my 5 am FIT family and the rest of the Farrell’s Bettendorf team!
